What is it?

This 1-day workshop will teach you how to tell the story of your work creatively by mixing quality interviews with colourful cutaways.

You'll learn interviewing technique, how to get your point across in a short space of time and how to plan, shoot and edit a 2-minute 'package' for the web.

You'll also learn ways to share it online, publicise your work and generate conversations around your subject.

Who is it for?

  • People who work for voluntary and community organisations
  • Council employees
  • Local activists or campaigners
  • Anyone who wants to learn more about using video to tell stories and start conversations about their work.

What will you learn?

  • Story-telling
  • Shooting (long, wide and close-up shots)
  • Planning a package
  • Piece to camera
  • Interviewing technique
  • Editing
  • Uploading

How will you learn it?

You and your fellow trainees will start the morning in a creative warehouse space in East London where we'll plan our videos, practice interviewing technique and send you on filming and expeditions around the beautiful stalls and cafes of Spitalfields Market. Following your adventurous morning in London, we'll have lunch near Brick Lane and the afternoon will be spent back in the warehouse where you will edit and upload your videos.

Bring your own laptop

We've been training people in video-blogging since 2005 and we've found that it's much better to leave a course knowing you can do everything you've learned that day when you get home or back to work.

We want you to bring your own laptops so we can make sure you have all the necessary software and plugins to carry on producing your fabulous video blogs after the training.

If you don't have a laptop, let us know and we will provide one for you.

Cameras

Same thing applies. We’ve found that courses where people bring their own cameras work really well. We provide cameras too – so don’t worry if you don’t have one – but we encourage you to use your own kit if possible as it means you'll be able to carry on producing video with more confidence after the course.

Pre & post-course activities

The learning starts before you get to us so once you’ve registered, we’ll give you some simple exercises to do before we meet so we can hit the ground running on the day.

We’ll also keep in touch with you after the course so you can send us things you’ve produced for feedback and you’ll have access to resources and useful links on our website and Facebook page.

Accessibility

We’re committed to making our courses as accessible as possible so please get in touch with us to discuss your situation. We’ll make sure someone is on hand on the day to give you support if you require it. The training venue and cafes we use are wheelchair accessible.

Food and Drink

We provide lunch and coffees, cakes and other nice things throughout the day. Let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.

Some of the (fabulous) things people have said...

Vinny Lee, Writer and Stylist and Interiors Editor of The Times Magazine:

"...next week I set off for a week's work in New York which has been set up largely using the blog..thank you so much for being so patient and for helping me to get up to speed with 21st century communications".

Craig Brierley, Media Officer, Wellcome Trust:

"I thought Nathalie was an excellent tutor, very relaxed (and patient) in her approach and never patronising, even when dealing with trainees who were not confident with technology".

Rachael Smith, Project Coordinator, CRISIS:

"A truly enjoyable experience, it really gets the creative juices flowing".

Tina Roche, CEO, BITC Ireland:

"The knowledge of Podcasting and Video blogging was great. I have become Messianic about it".
